Top 5 Photography Apps For Your Phone

Posted by Unknown on Friday, July 20, 2012

iPhone and Android Nowadays you don’t need an expensive DSLR to have fun with a camera – here’s a few apps you can download to get you feeling more snap-happy using your mobile phone.
1. Instagram
It comes as little of a surprise that Instagram has found a place on the list. Developers Burbn Inc claim that their app is enjoyed by 50 million people, and once you play with it a bit yourself you can’t help but believe them.
Instagram is available on iPhones, iPads, iPods and the more recent Android devices, and allows you to apply a multitude of filtered effects to your photos before sharing them on Facebook, Twitter and other social media websites.
Best of all is that the app is completely free, so you can inject some life into your snaps as often as you like.
2. 360 Panorama
As the name may suggest, 360 Panorama is an app designed to create panoramic images from a camera which would normally be too narrow to do so. Get snapping as you turn in a circle and watch the software stitch the photos together seamlessly, ready to share on Facebook, Twitter or whichever social network you frequent.
Similarly to Instagram, 360 Panorama is available on Android and most iProducts for a small fee of £0.69. Used with Facebook’s new Timeline cover photo feature, this app is a bit of a winner.
3. Photo Editor Ultimate
It wouldn’t really be fair to leave Blackberry owners out of the mix, so here’s an app you can download free from their App World.
Photo Editor Ultimate clumps together the ability to apply filters, edit, and resize photos ready to be uploaded to social networks and image hosting sites such as Imgur. It’s a pretty small file so unlike some photo editing apps, storage space shouldn’t be too much of a worry.
4. The Photographers Ephemeris
A fairly unique app which improves the quality of landscape and outdoor photos in a rather clever way.
The app calculates the sunrise and sunset times and places anywhere you happen to be in the world and allows you to calculate when and where the best photos can be achieved. This is a pretty handy tool if you’re planning on travelling some distance to get to a specific location to photograph – the last thing you want is to get to the site only to find it’s dark/raining/otherwise not optimal.
If you’re more interested in night-time photos then TPE has got you covered. As well as showing the rise and fall of the sun, the app can provide similar data for the moon and even help you with little things like the time that the moon will appear above a hill to get some stunning photos. What’s more, most features don’t require an internet connection to run so you really can take shots just about anywhere.
The bad news is that TPE costs $8.99 (around £5.73) for iPhones and a more modest £3.10 for Android devices. On the plus side, it’s just been released completely free for Windows/Mac/Linux so if you’re happy to research your destination in advance and hope that nothing changes before you get there then this is a good option.
5. Camera+
If you’re searching for good quality, professional looking photos then Camera+ is the app for you. Priced at £0.69 (though the developers say this is for a limited time) it provides your standard filtered effects as well as the ability to improve focus, lighting and exposure and even reduce blur.
Of course, it also comes with the ability to upload your snaps to Facebook, Twitter and wherever else you fancy, but for now it’s sadly limited to the iPhone.
Bonus: Color Splash
All of the above apps have certainly earned their place as must haves on the serious photographer’s mobile, but if you’re just after some funky looking pictures and a bit of fun in the process then Color Splash is a safe bet.
Costing £0.69, Color Splash allows you to create black and white images and bring vibrant colour to a specific area to create a dramatic and striking image.
It certainly has some good uses in the photographer’s repertoire, but it’s just as fun to play around with and give your friends bright red eyes or black teeth. Sadly, Color Splash is limited to Apple operating systems.

Determining the right amount of RAM for your PC

Posted by Unknown

ram
When searching for a new computer or simply wanting to upgrade your current PC’s specs, RAM is a huge determining factor.  It’s very important to choose the best RAM to fit your computing needs.  Pay too much for RAM you don’t need and it’s money down the drain; However, pay too little and you’ll be frustrated that your PC can’t keep up with your computing pace. Let’s look at the different options in terms of RAM so you can decide which is best suited for your needs!
1 GB
As for anyone that owns a computer, 1 GB should be the bare minimum in terms of RAM. 1 GB is the perfect amount for the user that loves to browse Facebook, play an online game and even listen to a YouTube video at the same time.  Don’t expect to be able to have two hundred different tabs open while playing World of Warcraft and have your PC to be running smooth and fast.  Or be able to crunch large datasets (such as when working with large Excel files).  Simple tasks can be done with 1 GB. Not much more really can.
Speaking of gaming (or any video intensive activities), on 1 GB of RAM you will achieve horrible results and may even be frustrated enough to want to throw your computer out the window.  While many games have minimum requirements below 1 GB, even with this type of setup, resolution will be low and frame rate will be extremely slow.  If you’re a gamer, it’s best that you look to higher options in terms of RAM.
From a business perspective, some small businesses might be able to get away with 1 GB of RAM.  However, the demands that most operating systems place on memory are growing and can leave your memory with little capacity for business applications (such as Quickbooks).
2 GB
2 GB is a significant step up from 1 GB and should really be utilized for anyone that likes to do a decent amount of multitasking on their machine.  With 2 GB of RAM, anyone can browse the web with a decent amount of tabs, crunch through sizable datasets, work on several applications and even edit HD videos at a decent speed.
PCs with 2 GB also have the ability to run powerful programs like Adobe Photoshop or Adobe After Effects at a decent speed.  However the demands on your RAM depend on the applications your running; if your current PC is at 2 GB of RAM and still feels slow, you need to bump up that RAM even more!
8 GB
Now we’re getting into professional territory.  For any serious data cruncher, gamer, photo editor, or video editor, 8 GB should be the bare minimum that you look to for performance.  8 GB of RAM will result in quick and effective PC performance and speed compared to the standards on the market today and the best part is that since RAM prices have come down significantly in recent years, 8 GB of RAM isn’t expensive at all.  8 GB of RAM blows 1 GB out of the water significantly.
More than 8 GB
Most PCs don’t need more than 8 GB of RAM to work efficiently.  Besides being much more expensive to upgrade to this amount of RAM (most PC motherboards are only outfitted for a specific number of slots and the higher RAM cards are more expensive), most applications won’t be able to access this amount of RAM.  More likely than not, you’ll find a bottleneck either in terms of processor, cache or bus speed that limits your PC’s ability to access this amount of RAM.  If not, odds are your applications won’t need it.
The only time you should consider this type of setup is if you’re the type of person that loves to multitask and run tons of resource-intensive applications at once.  Feel like watching 20 cat videos on YouTube at once while editing a 1080p video and editing in Photoshop?  Then by all means, this amount of RAM may be for you.  But for everyone else, 8 GB should be the max amount of RAM you should purchase.  Any more than that seems like a giant waste of money.
Final Words
There are numerous options in terms of how much RAM someone can have in their PC.  Each amount of RAM varies in terms of what it can do performance-wise for your PC.  1 GB is great for the simple user, 2 GB is for the multitasker, and 8 GB is for the gamer or techie professional.  Any more than that though and your money is going right down the drain!  Pick a RAM amount to fit your needs and you’ll have a fantastic PC for yourself.

Slow Broadband

Posted by Unknown

slow-broadband Last Friday I talked about a new breed of superfast broadband heading our way, however it would seem that in the current day many users still aren’t achieving anywhere near the maximum speeds promised by their ISPs.
Several months back my parents  had their Virgin Media line upgraded from a 2Mbps to a 10Mbps connection free of charge, due to the discontinuation of the older package.   This week my father mentioned that he hadn’t noticed a difference and so I performed a quick speed check which confirmed he was still on the old package; an issue resolved by a single phone call to Virgin.
I had a similar issue when Virgin upgraded me to 20Mbps without replacing my old, slow modem; once again a quick speed test provided me with the fodder to give them a call and get a new, faster broadband modem free of charge.
It is always important to check that you are receiving something that at least resembles what you’re paying for and fortunately a quick visit to www.speedtest.net will do just that.  Simply click on ‘begin test’ and within around thirty seconds you will be given the current download and upload speed achieved between your computer and the closest server – in our case, Maidenhead.
Please remember that the speed quoted by your ISP is most often a maximum obtainable speed and it would be completely reasonable to get something less.  This is especially true if you connect using ADSL via a convention phone line rather than via a fibre optic (Virgin Media) connection as the speed is heavily influenced from your distance to the closest exchange.
While this one factor cannot be helped, there are several routes you can take if your actual speed is completely disproportionate to that promised by your ISP:
-          Talk to them – In many instances your ISP will be able to run tests to ensure that your poor performance isn’t due to a fault such as excessive line noise.  I’ve seen customers have their connections increased in speed exponentially by simply reporting a fault and having an inherent problem removed; this work is paid for by the phone provider.  Even in a worst case scenario where the line speed cannot be increased, it is possible that you could get moved down to a cheaper package while suffering no loss in performance.
-          Update your router firmware – Most of us nowadays will connect to the Internet via a router which, if not doing its job properly, will result in slower download speeds.  Problems with a router can in many instances be rectified by updating it with the latest software via a free firmware update provided by the original manufacturer.  These updates are usually distributed free of charge online and serve as a way of the manufacturers improving the features, security and speed of their existing products as and when improvements are discovered.
-          Clean up your PC– Many cases of connection slowdown are caused by a needlessly large amount of software in the background either slowing down the computer itself or hogging a proportion of the Internet bandwidth.  Ensure that your Operating System is always kept clean and most importantly ensure that peer to peer file sharing programs (such as BitTorrent) aren’t set to run in the background as these will certainly slow your connection.

World of Warcraft

World-of-Warcraft The below article has been written by our very own Becky Brand who works in our Torquay Store and has long been a diehard fan of the World of Warcraft series of games.   As an avid gamer; I thought she would be better equipped to talk about this subject with you this week.
World of Warcraft (or WoW) is the massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) from Blizzard Entertainment.   Warcraft initially started out as a series of three games ending in Warcraft 3 with World of Warcraft being set after these games.
When you start the game you need to create an avatar which you will control as you explore the fictional world of Azeroth.  You have a choice of two sides; either the Alliance or the Horde with each side having a number of different races that you can play as including Trolls, Dwarfs, Humans, Gnomes and Orcs.
Depending on your gaming style you may choose to be a Warrior, who charges in and takes the full wrath of the enemies, or maybe a mage who blasts your enemies with spells from a distance.   There are also many different classes including Priests, Rogues, Paladins, and Shamans, so there is almost always a way of playing to suit most people.   Once you have your character you will need to quest to earn level ups, armour upgrades and new skills to improve your ability to tackle stronger enemies and bosses.
With approximately 12 million subscribers worldwide, World of Warcraft is one of the biggest online role playing games.  Contrary to popular belief; it’s not just teenage boys lacking in social ability who play World of Warcraft as it genuinely does appeal to many.
Whilst travelling around you will bump into parents sneaking a quick hour in whilst their kids sleep, men and women who use Warcraft to relax after a hard days work, much in the same way many people will watch their soaps of an evening.  The folklore in World of Warcraft is so deep and vast it’s almost like an interactive Lord of the Rings.
Admittedly  you rarely actually meet the people you play with in Warcraft, but when you keep bumping into the same characters in game, or join a guild with a good group of players, you start to form acquaintances and friendships with the other players.  There has even been a few couples who met in the World of Warcraft and ended up being happily married – you are able to make the game as social an experience as you want.
You have the option to group up with other characters, where your character will take on a particular role in the group; for example Priests heal, warriors tank and mages deal the damage. There is even the option of forming a raid group of up to 40 characters to try and overcome the extra strong bosses that are scattered across the lands.
You would think that all games must come to an end, however World of Warcraft is different in that you can always strive to earn better armour so you can defeat the strongest bosses in the game, or try and earn the in game achievements for different titles and rewards.  Blizzard also periodically introduce expansions, which raise the maximum level, and introduce new content and areas to the game.
Like any good franchise the game has a plethora of accessories, merchandise and books to go along with it and along with millions of subscriptions across the world, Warcraft is clearly a highly lucrative business which will be around for a long time to come.

Google Books – Online Literature Library

Posted by Unknown

Googlebookslogo The idea of Google Books was first conceived in 2002 when a small group of Google programmers started pondering the question of how many man hours it would take to scan every single book ever written.    We still don’t know the true answer to this question although just eight years from the idea conception there are now over 10 million books catalogued in their database.
While the first scan was done manually on a 300 page book and took 40 minutes to process, Google now use cameras capable of scanning at a rate of 1,000 pages an hour and also work with 20,000 publisher partners who provide content directly.  They have also been able to provide over 1 million books that can be read in full from cover to cover; these unrestricted works are either books that have fallen out of copyright or have been provided with publishers express permission.
As well as simply scanning the books, Google performs OCR (Optical Character Recognition) on the pages, thereby turning them in to pure text which can be entered in to their database.  As a result when you do a Google Search you are now not only returned results from relevant websites but also your search terms are checked against a library encompassing millions of books and appropriate matches are suggested for further reading.
The integration in to the Google Search engine means you may have already inadvertently stumbled across Google Books but if you haven’t and are eager to explore then the Google Books can be found by visiting the site http://books.google.co.uk/ directly.   Being a Google service, it almost goes without saying that the service is completely free of charge and is instead paid for via a minimal number of sponsored links which are in no way intrusive or detrimental to the service.
From the Google Books site you can perform searches, add books to your virtual library or organise your collection in a logical manner.  Searching for a book and then subsequently clicking on it opens an interface which allows you to either view the directly scanned pages from the book or in some instances a ‘plain text’ version.  This plain text can then be copied and passed to another application or simply printed out for reading offline.
Books still under copyright enjoy the protection of a variety of access limitations and security measures which limit the number of viewable pages making the experience somewhat akin to being able to flick through the first couple of pages in a library or bookshop.   Despite this protection there have rather predictably been a number of fairly major lawsuits issued by individuals and publishers alike; some with legitimate grievances and others just seeking money or publicity.
Possibly the most notable case was between The Authors Guild, the publishing industry and Google which resulted in Google agreeing to a settlement on October 28, 2008.  This would see them pay a total $125 million not only to pay the court costs of the plaintiffs but also create a Book Rights Registry which will collect and disburse revenue generated by all third party sites such as Google which provide content based on the content of books covered by the agreement.
These issues aside, on the whole I am amazed that again this relatively new company have been able to offer such an incredible gift to the world.  With Google Books we have the potential to preserve centuries of human literacy work for generations to come as well as promoting the spread and availability of knowledge amongst all groups and all classes of people.

Cashback Websites – Get money back on online purchases

Posted by Unknown

TopCashBackLogo I have a saying that goes something along the lines of ‘A penny saved is 1.22 pennies earned’ and while I’ll admit it’s not the catchiest of proverbs it certainly does hold some truth for the majority of us.  Owing to the fact that you’re taxed on almost everything you earn, it is genuinely better to save a penny than earning an additional one and fortunately the Internet offers various methods of allowing us to do just that.
Money Saving Expert (www.moneysavingexpert.com) for example is a site that I turn to time and again to ensure that I’m always getting the best deal on my current account, credit card, utilities and so forth.  As well as offering news and comparisons of various financial products on the market is also gives you a heads of to any discount vouchers or special offers valid at places such as restaurants and supermarkets which you would most likely visit anyway.
Keeping with the financial theme, I’m amazed at how many people are unaware of the various ‘cash back’ sites that are present on the Internet.  One which I’ve just started using is Top Cash Back (www.topcashback.co.uk), a site which takes only a couple of minutes to sign up to before you can start earning money on purchased that you would most likely be making anyway.  Top Cash back has no set up or membership fees and the idea essentially is that if you visit one of their sponsors via the site then you’ll actually get a cash reward paid straight in to your account.
There are hundreds of big name featured retailers including Play.com, Tesco, Asda, B&Q and Dell and along with the usual couple of per cent back you occasionally come across an offer which is ridiculously generous.  As an example I recently signed up for O2 broadband at home which, as an existing O2 mobile customer, would usually cost me £7.50 a month for the 16mb package, including unlimited bandwidth.  By going via Top Cash Back I actually got a £75 cash back bonus meaning that during the contractual year my O2 Broadband has actually only cost me £1.25 a month (£7.50 a Month x 12 Months – £75 Cashback = £15 per annum or £1.25 monthly).
The service works as retailers pay Top Cash Back to be featured with the intention that they can then accumulate more customers by also offering them rewards to buy their products.  It’s only a beneficial system for the customer if they buy things they would only have purchased anyway; I also signed up to Sky HD last month which again was something I was planning to do but simply by visiting this website first I got an extra £50 straight in to my bank account.  It’s just too easy!

Starting out as a Webdesigner

Posted by Unknown

website-design This article is aimed at giving some rudimentary tips and guidelines which help in making a website designing business a successful one.
Starting off a new business is as critical as it is exciting. Yes, it does give you the much cringed for independence, however, along with it comes responsibility. Establishing your own Website designing company can sometimes be a formidable task, mainly because, you are a Greenhorn in a situation where there have already been pioneers.
Nevertheless, it isn’t impossible to become a business magnate if the following simple tips are kept in mind.

Attitude goes a long way
Obvious as it may seem, the right kind of attitude is the harbinger of wealth and prosperity. Setting up a web-based business is comparatively easier than other businesses, but it requires a lot of patience and retrospection. Things take time to get going, and you must be motivated throughout your journey to pull through the odds.
It is also vital that you think of your web design business as a job. It goes without saying that your image and conduct should, without a doubt, always be professional. This goes for your website as well. An exclusive domain has to be purchased, for both, your website and your email ids. Acquire all the requisite business stationery including business cards, letterheads, envelopes etc. And have a separate business account for the financial transactions.
Another important thing to bear in mind is to ensure that your language is impeccable while drafting letters or business emails. It leaves a lasting impression on the client’s mind if there are any mistakes in your own communication. Always project confidence and competence.

Time Management
Time management is not just an essential when it comes to business. It is important for anything and everything. Managing time effectively ensures a healthy work environment and better productivity. It also means more money! If you can pre-set the number of hours you dedicate to your business development, on your on-hand projects and research activities, there will never be any problem with respect to effective utilisation of time. However, some flexibility is always advisable when it comes to business from time to time.

Goodwill through Client Relationships
The maximum business that you will get from is your existing client base. It is nice to look for new clients always, but one should remember never to leave your existing clients unattended. They will recommend you to others and also select you for further services as well. Always understand their requirements, give them the best of services and bespoke web designs. Never over-price your services and always exceed their expectations.
A happy customer is worth 2 prospective ones. If you can show them how much you care for their business you’d be surprised at how much they’d care for yours.

Networking
Whether it is word of mouth or social networking platforms, do not restrain yourself from spreading awareness about your brand/organisation and the services provided by you. Exploit social forums, communities, trade fairs, business summits and just about anywhere, to propagate your name. You never know where business can come from.

Blogging
Blog about various things in your domain. Put up a blog on our website itself, where people can read the necessary information. If you write good articles continually, not only will it give you a better page ranking, it will also bring in more and more people to your website who are actually your target audience and are looking for the services that you are providing. This is an inexpensive way to reach your target audience.

Technical Proficiency
Always attempt to better yourself in whatever you are doing. Try to get hold of the latest technologies and practice it. Try increasing your portfolio in every possible way. If you get stuck somewhere, ask questions on social forums for support. If you know the answers to someone else’s questions, then answer them.
Basically, do not “Stagnate”. Stay dynamic, learn new things, and master what you already know.

Conclusion
That being said, one should always remember that setting up your own website development company in London or anywhere else in the world, is an on-going process. You cannot adhere to the above tips initially and forget about them in the later stages. This has to go on. Face the challenges and turn them into better opportunities. Never hesitate to seek help from online forums.
Always invest in the best quality equipment and technologies. That pays off in the long run. You can easily work out of your home, garage, or even your car, but you cannot work with cheap technology. Stay dedicated and motivated, and see your business boom!
It’s possible to set up a web design business from home very quickly with just a laptop, phone, and an internet connection. However, you will need to employ all the above skills and more to succeed. But, once up and running, a web design business can afford you with one of the best and most fulfilling professional lifestyles.

4 Easy Tips on Creating a Good Password

Posted by Unknown

Password You may wonder why there are always so many articles and blog posts dedicated to something as simple as creating a password. It’s simple and no big deal right? Wrong. If it were really that easy then mind you my friend no one would be talking about it. And if everyone could just get it right then surely no one would ever need to search it up more than once on Google.
Password security is essential in the world we live in today, simply because all our important day’s work revolves around a computer and/or a cell phone. We use the internet to pay bills, shop, share opinions and views, watch television and music, share photos and videos, buy airline tickets, manage our bank accounts and the list goes on and on. It’s an exhaustive list if we get down to talking about all the things we get onto our respective devices and log onto the World Wide Web for. And the logging on is done through the means of a password of course. And if a hacker gets hold of it and installs a computer monitoring app or a keylogger, then the chances are you will lose a lot more than your Facebook account. So in order to continue doing everything that you hold dear online, follow these tips to create a good password:
  1. Use long passwords. Yes it works. The longer your password is the more keys are involved in it. This means that by using numeric characters along with a long string of letters, your password will be hard to access through brute force search, or even by someone accidently glancing at you while you type it in.
  2. Avoid anything personal. This means no names of people you know, places you live/work, phone numbers, birth dates, or anything else that links to your identity or that of anyone you know. Spy software such as keyloggers can later relay this information to remote centers which may compromise your security as well as privacy in more dire ways.
  3. Sometimes remembering different passwords for different accounts can be a hassle, but do not ever make the mistake of using the same password across the board and for all your online accounts. If even one password is compromised, then you can bet that the first thing hackers and malware professionals will attempt is to use it on all your other accounts. So work on your memory, write the passwords down in a safe place if you have to, but do not make the mistake of using a single glorified password everywhere.
  4. Some say you should treat your password like your toothbrush, that is, change it every three months. Of course, this is really up to you. And if you have a large number of accounts, then this may be something that could tax your memory and in the long run do nothing but have you confused and juggling your mind for which password works and for where. So if you feel the need to change passwords more than once in two months, make sure you don’t repeat previous ones or rotate them from different accounts. This way you will avoid a good deal of confusion.
So please try and make your life easier by keeping secure and easy to use/remember passwords. A good deal of saving will be done on headache medicine if nothing else.
